One Month For Humanity and International Humanitarian Laws

WAR CRIMES and CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY: Denial of Care, deadly forced evacuations, destruction of medical facilities — Israeli military forces caused deaths and unnecessary suffering of Palestinian patients while occupying hospitals in the Gaza Strip during the current hostilities, amounting to war crimes, Human Rights Watch said on March-30th. Witnesses at three hospitals told Human Rights Watch that ISR forces denied electricity, water, food, and medicines to patients; shot civilians; mistreated health workers; and deliberately destroyed medical facilities and equipment. Unlawful forced evacuations put patients at grave risk and left desperately needed hospitals nonfunctional.

‘Scholasticide’: How Israel is systematically destroying Palestinian education in Gaza

There is ‘total annihilation of Palestinian education’ in Gaza, says Abdel Razzaq Takriti of Scholars Against the War on Palestine

Since the Hamas attack on Israel on 7 October 2023, Israel has stepped up its efforts to drive dozens of Palestinian shepherding communities in the northern Jordan Valley out of their homes and lands. Through cooperation and collaboration among the military, police, settlers and the Jordan Valley Regional Council, Israel has reduced grazing areas available to Palestinians, blocked regular water supply and took measures to isolate the Jordan Valley from the rest of the West Bank. What lies ahead?

After more than fifty years, it is impossible to continue viewing the occupation as a temporary situation.
The half century that has gone by, Israel’s conduct, and the official positions expressed openly by increasing numbers of Israeli leaders, all come together to make Israel’s goals clear: promoting Israeli interests and establishing ever more facts on the ground, while seeking to minimize the cost this ought to exact in the international arena; taking over ever more land and developing settlements while continuing to drive out and dispossess the Palestinians; continuing to control millions of Palestinian subjects bereft of rights, while maintaining democratic appearances; and weakening the resistance – in Palestine, Israel and around the world – to a continued state of occupation.

Given this state of affairs, the implications of standing idly by are well understood. What is now needed is not just more words and analysis. What is needed is decisive action to end international cooperation with Israel’s policy, in pursuit of ending the occupation and ushering in a future based on the realization of human rights, including political rights, for all people living between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea.

Leaders of more than 30 news organizations around the world, including the Associated Press, Agence France-Presse, and Reuters, have joined an open letter on Thursday affirming that they “stand united with Palestinian journalists in their call for safety, protection, and the freedom to report.”

The letter, coordinated by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) with the support of the World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA), emphasizes the perilous environment for members of the press covering the Israel-Gaza war, the deadliest conflict for journalists ever documented by CPJ.

Despite the risks, the journalists continue to try to keep the spotlight on the suffering of Palestinian civilians.

Like everyone now in the Gaza Strip, photojournalist Mohammed Zaanoun, journalist Maha Hussaini, and journalist Mohamed Soulaimane have been living breath by breath, in fear of what might fall from the sky, but they continue to send photographs and video and audio clips to keep the spotlight on what people there are experiencing.

Back in December, a group of UN-backed international experts warned that there was a risk of famine in Gaza, with 90% of the population facing acute levels of food insecurity. Now, young children have reportedly begun to die due to malnutrition. Last month, the International Court of Justice ordered Israel to enable the provision of humanitarian assistance to the enclave, which has been under total Israeli siege since 7 October. Since the order, however, the already limited amount of aid entering the enclave has dropped by half. As journalist Maha Hussaini reports, the situation is worst in the north, where hundreds of thousands of people who stayed behind after Israel’s evacuation orders in October are on the brink of starvation.
